It's possible that some other software may attempt to read the in-camera settings and apply those to the image, but for the most part non-Nikon software is simply going to apply their own default processing that is also completely adjustable. For example if you have the camera set to Standard and use Nikon NX-D software to change it to Landscape, the result is the exact same as if you had set the camera to Landscape to begin with. The Picture Controls are settings that are applied to the raw sensor data during processing. That is if LightZone happens to be compatible with your Linux version in the unbelievably tangled mess of incompatible distros and packages. If you're dead-set against Windows, absolutely must use Linux exclusively, and don't wish to utilize the powerful Nikon software tools, LightZone is my preferred OpenSource raw editor. Even create your own Picture Control presets and load them into the camera. Open your raw files, change from Standard to Landscape or any other preset and back as many times as you wish with no permanent effect on the raw file, adjust any of the Picture Control settings manually, turn the Active-D Lighting on and off, choose the White Balance with the exact same effect as setting it in-camera. Nikon's Picture Control system is powerful but under-used.

I used to switch off all sharpening and processing by cameras/scanners/converters thinking that I'd do it (better) in Photoshop. Now I've got NEFs from a Nikon D810 and am using Linux and Gimp 2.10, so everything's different.
